South Sudan on UNMISS Mandate Renewal

<p>South Sudan has reaffirmed its commitment to taking full responsibility for peace and security, as the United Nations considers renewing the mandate of its peacekeeping mission in the country.</p><p><br></p><p>In a statement delivered to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Sabino Edward Nyawela Amaikwey expressed appreciation to member states for their continued engagement and support to South Sudan.</p><p><br></p><p>He commended the United Nations, as well as troop- and police-contributing countries, for their sustained efforts during a critical phase of the country’s nation-building process.</p><p><br></p><p>The government acknowledged the vital role played by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, UNMISS, in supporting the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, protecting civilians, and facilitating humanitarian assistance.</p><p><br></p><p>However, the statement emphasized that the primary responsibility for ensuring peace, security, and the protection of civilians lies with the Government of South Sudan.</p><p><br></p><p>The ambassador reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening national institutions to sustainably take over these responsibilities.</p>
