SOUTH SUDAN MOURNS LIBERATION HERO LAGU ON SIXTH DAY OF FUNERAL

November 2, 2026 2 min read

South Sudan continues to mourn the death of liberation struggle hero and former leader of the Anyanya Movement, General Joseph Lagu Yanga, as funeral activities enter their sixth day. General Lagu, who played a historic role in South Sudan’s liberation struggle, also served in senior positions in the Sudanese government under the leadership of former President Gaafar Nimeiry. Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore has expressed condolences to the bereaved family, describing the late Lagu as a freedom fighter whose contributions laid the foundation for today's independent South Sudan. Governor Lobong says the late leader's achievements continue to shape the country's development. Senior officials from the SSBC, alongside diplomatic representatives, have also visited the funeral site to pay their last respects, offer condolences and comfort the bereaved family and the nation.

The Chairperson of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee of the United Democratic Front Party has described General Lagu as one of the most senior liberation fighters, whose legacy will remain in the memories of South Sudanese.

The late General's daughter, Josephine Lagu, has called on South Sudanese to remain committed to nation-building and the ideals of freedom for which her father fought. She says her father has completed his historic mission, and it is now the responsibility of the remaining leaders to carry forward the struggle by addressing the country's outstanding challenges, including displacement and national development.
